The Coalition on West Valley Nuclear Wastes celebrated its 50th anniversary with a picnic on September 7 at the Olmsted Camp in Sardinia; about 50 people attended. The coalition grew out of the Springville Radiation Study Group, formed soon after processing of radioactive wastes from nuclear power plants ended, leaving the fate of the contaminated site uncertain. LWVBN joined almost from the start, speaking up for an environmentally sound cleanup. The longest continuously involved League member in the activist group is Joanne Hameister of East Aurora.
