Members of the LWVBN Healthcare Committee are excited to greet you after being newly certified by our board at its September meeting.
The eight League members who comprise the committee are dedicated to educating ourselves, other League members and the community regarding issues that impact the health of people in Erie and Niagara Counties. Non-League members may join us, and other League members are welcome. We meet at 2:00 p.m. on the fourth Monday of each month.
Some of our past accomplishments, in partnership with others, include surveillance and communication about the West Valley Nuclear Site, presentation of an all-day conference at the Central Library titled Health Justice is Racial Justice, and sponsorship of a talk by Robin Bernstein, author of William Freeman: The Origins of Prisons for Profit.
Currently, we are continuing our efforts regarding the West Valley Nuclear Site; working with a Niagara University senior who is creating a law that would make information about SNAP benefits more accessible to college students; collaborating with D’Youville University to produce a program about healthcare justice and racial justice in Spring 2025; and joining with the Campaign for New York Health and LWVNY in creating a Western New York task force to provide education about universal healthcare.
Last, we are collaborating with BestSelf Behavioral Health and the National Alliance on Mental Illness to offer FREE mental health first aid training. From 9:00 a.m. till 1:00 p.m. on November 21 and 22, 2024, we have the privilege of participating in a comprehensive program at the BestSelf offices at 768 Delaware Ave., Buffalo, NY 14202 (corner of Summer). We require a minimum of 10 people, so please let’s get ourselves prepared and comfortable for holiday events and meeting a variety of people. To register for this training, contact the League office at 716-986-4898 or by email at lwvbn@lwvbn.org. Please leave your name, phone number and email address.
We have a dynamic, committed group and welcome others. If you are interested in attending a meeting or in any of our agenda topics, please call me.
